CNN anchor John Berman took shots at Fox News and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” hosts on late Monday night over their relationships with President-elect Donald Trump.
Berman, a morning anchor filling in for “CNN Newsnight,” knocked former Fox News host Pete Hegseth for being picked by Trump to serve in his administration and took aim at MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski over their visit to see Trump in Mar-a-Lago that sparked widespread social media backlash.
“I’m John Berman. You might know me from a cable morning show, though not the one that might soon have a Defense Secretary who paid a woman that accused him of sexual assault, nor the one that just sent 2 anchors to Mar-a-Lago, then talked about it like it was the Yalta summit,” he said as he opened the show.
“I cohost the morning show here on CNN that starts in like 10 minutes, so let’s get right to what America is talking about,” he added.
Berman referenced the sexual assault allegations facing Hegseth that have come to light in the days since Trump announced his intent to nominate the former Fox News host to be his Defense Secretary. Hegseth was accused of sexual assault in 2017 in California, but no charges were filed.
Meanwhile, Scarborough and Brzezinski are under fire from liberal social media users and pundits. Critics accused the co-hosts of “Morning Joe” of meeting with Trump to drive viewership despite the two of them frequently taking aim at Trump during the campaign, calling him a “fascist” at times.
“Joe and I went to Mar-a-Lago to meet personally with President-elect Trump,” Brzezinski said on Monday’s show. “And for those asking why we would go speak to the president-elect during such fraught times, especially between us, I guess I would ask back, why wouldn’t we?”
Comedian Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” criticized them for taking the trip to Mar-a-Lago on Monday’s episode. Even former GOP South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley questioned the trip, saying the co-hosts need Trump for their “survival.”
But the co-hosts did not seem bothered by the social media backlash on Tuesday’s show, with Scarborough saying that there was a “massive disconnect” between social media and the real world.
“Yesterday I saw for the first time what a massive disconnect there was between social media and the real world because we were flooded with phone calls from people all day, literally around the world, all very positive, very supportive,” he said.
